Water Safety
Supervision is the first line of defense for children when they are in and around pools, beaches, and bathtubs. All caregivers should be aware of water safety to prevent drowning.
- Teach children how to swim with a trusted adult as early as possible.
- Have appropriate safety equipment such as life jackets and float rings available. The AAP does not promote puddle jumpers as appropriate flotation devices for level 1 or 2 life jackets.
- Teach and educate children about water safety rules to prevent accidents.
- Remember that swim lessons, flotation devices, and fences are only secondary safety measures.
