What is the “Flu”

The Influenza virus is a contagious acute respiratory virus that typically increases in frequency seasonally during the fall and winter months.

Flu season” is a term used for when the virus spread and illness occur more frequently, although it is possible to get an influenza virus any time of the year and spikes in spread can last until mid/late Spring some years.

Symptoms include:
  • Fever, often sudden
  • chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue and/or body aches
  • Runny and/or stuffy nose
  • Headache

Children (and adults) with the flu usually feel sicker and more uncomfortable than with a typical cold with symptoms lasting up to 1 week.

Children with chronic medical conditions may be at higher risk for severe illness or complications from the influenza virus.

Treatment
Because the flu is caused by a virus, antibiotics are not needed.
Primary treatment involves symptom relief.

  • Fever/pain reducers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen
  • Hydration and rest
  • Nasal saline/suctioning as needed for congestion.

Antiviral treatments are available and may be especially useful in children with chronic illness or high risk of complications.

  • Discuss these medications with your pediatrician if your child has the flu or flu-like symptoms.

Prevention
Because the flu is caused by a virus, antibiotics are not needed.
Primary treatment involves symptom relief.

  • Annual flu vaccines are recommended for all children 6 months of age and older.
